Indpendence 150 Committee

Planning is underway for the OR150 Celebration, Independence style. The events will kick off on Thursday, August 13th at the Amphitheater in Riverview Park, Independence. The movie series will host a special viewing of the film “Wagons West” produced by the New York Life Insurance Company who underwrote the original trip in 1959. This DVD has been amended by Wayne and Linda Gisel of Hillsboro to include a fictitious story filmed with the On to Oregon Cavalcade and a special saga by Jeanne Marshall VanMeter, folowed by a full feature film starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. On Friday many of the “On to Oregon Cavalcade” members will be arriving, this time they will be in the lap of luxury, RVing down at the park. The regular concert series will feature two local bands and a hometown barbecue on Friday night. Saturday will behold a flurry of activities for the entire family including games, story telling, oral histories, dutch oven cooking classes and demonstrations; followed by a chuck wagon style community dinner made exclusively using dutch ovens. Some good ol’ foot stompin’ music, featuring some local yokels that you may know, and infamous musical talents of The Trail Band, will be serenading you at the feast. So mark your calendars and get those old bonnets and day dresses out of the attic ‘cuz you’re all invited to the shindig!

If you have any questions or would like to participate in this event please call the Heritage Museum at 503-838-4989.
