Area Activities

We’re so glad you’re visiting our website! Are you planning a trip to the area? Here are some ideas of where to get information and what to do:

Stop by the Monmouth- Independence Visitor’s Center & Chamber of Commerce. For all sorts of information about Oregon in general try The Oregon Bluebook, everything about Oregon.

The City of Independence is located along the Willamette River, and is on the Willamette Valley Birding Trail, the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway and the Willamette River Water Trail.

There are also many wineries to explore including Redgate Vineyard, Airlie Winery, Eola Hills Winery and others found here. If beer is more your thing be sure to head south of town to visit Rogue Micro Hop Yard where you can tour the hop farm and taste the fruits of the vine, er, bine.

The City of Monmouth is located a few miles west of Independence and is home to Western Oregon University. From art shows, to theatrical and musical performances, to sporting events WOU brings fun and vitality to the community like only a university can.

The Polk County Historical Society (PCHS) was formed in 1959.  The PCHS is an all volunteer organization operated solely on donated funds, grants, memberships and admissions. Each year the PHCS holds several major fund raising events including the Brunk House’s Annual Apple Festival and a Porch Sale in July. PCHS’s extensive museum and research library can be found at 560 S Pacific Hwy, Rickreall, Oregon. Call 503-623-6251 with questions.

The Historic Gentle House (855 Monmouth Avenue N, Monmouth, Oregon 97361) was home to Thomas Gentle, his wife and five children from 1914 into the 1950s. Thomas taught at Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University). The Gentle family donated the house to the Universtiy Foundation in 1981 and since then it has been used for weddings, fundraisers, picnics and other special events. The upstairs, however, is set up similarly to how it was when the family lived there, with many of their original belongings. It does not have regular open hours, but call (503) 838-8673 and the staff will be happy to accomodate a visit/tour if they can. Here is a recent article by the local paper: Western’s Hidden Gem

Want to explore even more of the Willamette Valley? Salem Attractions will tell you about all sorts of places to see in the greater Salem area, and Salem Annual Events will tell you when some really fun events happen so you can plan to attend them!
