The Polk County Historical Society (PCHS) was formed in 1959. The PCHS is an all volunteer organization operated solely on donated funds, grants, memberships and admissions. Each year the PHCS holds several major fund raising events including the Brunk House’s Annual Apple Festival and a Porch Sale in July. The Historic Gentle House (855 Monmouth Avenue N, Monmouth, Oregon 97361) was home to Thomas Gentle, his wife and five children from 1914 into the 1950s. Thomas taught at Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University). The Gentle family donated the house to the Universtiy Foundation in 1981 and since then it has been used for weddings, fundraisers, picnics and other special events. The upstairs, however, is set up similarly to how it was when the family lived there, with many of their original belongings. It does not have regular open hours, but call (503) 838-8673 and the staff will be happy to accomodate a visit/tour if they can. Here is a recent article by the local paper: Western’s Hidden Gem
